Why Planners Don't Work & What to Do About It
You ever get so wrapped up at staring at rows and rows of planners?
"Oh, this one has a beautiful blue cover."
"Oh, wait. This one has an inspirational quote on the front."
Anyone? Cause I know it isn't just me.
You buy that shiny $20 pretty planner, write in it just once, and then you never use it again. A whole $20 wasted because it's only good for one year.
Let me tell you I have been in that situation more times I can count. I'm guilty for being sucked in and buying something pretty and new. However, recognizing this cycle is the first step to stopping and dropping this terrible habit as it no longer serves you.
Planners often fail because we assume it is the cure all fix all to organizing our life, but it isn't. Your brain works differently, and you need to come to terms with that because there is no shame in it. Forcing yourself into rigid boxes will leave you frustrated and drained (I've been there).
Here are some things to remember as I hope they help you as they've helped me.
- Societal norm of using planners may not be your norm. Everyone is different and there is no shame in planning differently. If at all. If you feel pressured into using a planner, don't. It might cause you more stress than you want.
- Instead find something that does work for you. Whether it's a small list of important things for that day, week, month, etc. You can also use outlook calendar to plan things. Maybe journal what you want to do daily.
- Don't like lists? Neither do I! Preferably I write what I did that day in a journal. You can also use Sticky Notes (or any notepad) on the computer. Experiment and see what works for you.
This blog is meant to be encouraging so don't be afraid to experiment to see what best suits you. Remember that no solution is a one size fits all. My advice is to try not to repeat habits that are not doing anything for you because it can be a waste of energy and tire you out.
